This article seeks to highlight the most recent trends and themes in genetic counseling that are of broad interest. A total of 3505 documents were published between 1952 and 2021, with a trend toward increase in paper/year. The most common documents are original articles (2515, 71.8%), followed by review articles (341, 9.7%). Journal of Genetic Counseling publishes the highest number of genetic counseling articles (587, 16.7%), followed by Clinical Genetics (103, 2.9%) and the South American Journal of Medical Genetics (95, 2.7%). Co-occurrence analysis revealed five research themes: genetic testing, cancer, genetic counselor, prenatal diagnosis, and psychiatry. The genetic counselor theme contained most of the recent keywords, including "covid-19," "underrepresented population," "service delivery models," "workforce," "disparities," "service delivery," "professional development," "cultural competence," "access," "diversity," "telemedicine," and "health literacy." Genetic counseling researchers may use these keywords to find topics pertinent to their future research and practice.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified thousands of genetic variants associated with human traits or diseases in the past decade. Nevertheless, much of the heritability of many traits is still unaccounted for. Commonly used single-trait analysis methods are conservative, while multi-trait methods improve statistical power by integrating association evidence across multiple traits. In contrast to individual-level data, GWAS summary statistics are usually publicly available, and thus methods using only summary statistics have greater usage. Although many methods have been developed for joint analysis of multiple traits using summary statistics, there are many issues, including inconsistent performance, computational inefficiency, and numerical problems when considering lots of traits. To address these challenges, we propose a multi-trait adaptive Fisher method for summary statistics (MTAFS), a computationally efficient method with robust power performance. We applied MTAFS to two sets of brain imaging derived phenotypes (IDPs) from the UK Biobank, including a set of 58 Volumetric IDPs and a set of 212 Area IDPs. Through annotation analysis, the underlying genes of the SNPs identified by MTAFS were found to exhibit higher expression and are significantly enriched in brain-related tissues. Together with results from a simulation study, MTAFS shows its advantage over existing multi-trait methods, with robust performance across a range of underlying settings. It controls type 1 error well and can efficiently handle a large number of traits.

Rapid advances in genetic testing have improved the probability of successful genetic diagnosis. For couples who undergo a termination of pregnancy (TOP) due to foetal congenital malformations, these techniques may reveal the underlying cause and satisfy parents' need to know. The aim of this qualitative descriptive research study was to explore couples' experience of being recontacted after a congenital malformation-related TOP, as well as their reasons for participation. A retrospective cohort of 31 eligible candidates was recontacted for additional genetic testing using a standardized letter followed by a telephone call. Fourteen participants (45%) were included. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews at a hospital genetics department (UZ Brussel). Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. We found that despite the sometimes considerable length of time that passed since TOP, participants were still interested in new genetic testing. They appreciated that the initiative originated from the medical team, describing it as a "sensitive" approach. Both intrinsic (providing answers for themselves and their children) and extrinsic motivators (contributing to science and helping other parents) were identified as important factors for participation. These results show that participants often remain interested in being recontacted for new genetic testing such as whole genome sequencing, even after several years. As such, the results of this study can offer guidance in the more general current debate on recontacting patients in the field of genetics.
