Nine tetrahydrofuran lignans, including three undescribed spiro-lignans, were isolated from Isatis indigotica Fortune (Brassicaceae). Extensive spectroscopic analyses achieved the structure elucidation of these tetrahydrofuran lignans, and quantum chemical calculation combined with the MAEΔΔδ parameter. Notably, isatispironeols A-B have a unique spiro[dienone-tetrahydrofuran] molecular core. These spiro[dienone-tetrahydrofuran] lignans showed comparable neuroprotective effects as the positive control in the H2O2-induced SH-SY5Y cells model. In addition, (-)-(7R,8S,1'R,7'R,8'R)-isatispironeol A possessed more significant AChE inhibitory activity, further interact sites were also predicted by the in silico assay.

Essential oils are extensively used in the food, cosmetic, perfume, pharmaceutical, and agrochemical industries due to their aroma and pharmacological properties. The Lamiaceae family is mainly represented by widely well-known medicinal and aromatic plants that produce essential oil. Over the years, Sideritis L. essential oils have attracted great interest due to their chemical variability among the different taxa and their pharmacological activities. In-depth research of previously published literature was performed on electronic databases with several key search words for the collection of the available data and a total of 128 scientific studies were used since 1983. To date, 155 accepted Sideritis taxa have been studied originating from 15 countries and more than 250 compounds have been reported in 87 Sideritis taxa overall. Furthermore, antimicrobial and antioxidant effects have been the most studied pharmacological activities. This review summarizes and critically discusses the research work on the chemical composition and pharmacological activities of essential oil of the genus Sideritis based on the currently valid taxonomy. Additionally, statistical analysis is encompassed to provide a deeper comprehensive understanding of the high chemical polymorphism of Sideritis essential oils. We expect that this review will encourage researchers to investigate unexplored Sideritis taxa and will contribute to revealing uncharted scientific territory and future perspectives on these plants.

Many Polygonaceae taxa such as Bistorta officinalis, Persicaria amphibia, Persicaria hydropiper, Persicaria lapathifolia, Persicaria maculosa, Persicaria mitis, Polygonum aviculare occur naturally in the entire territory of Poland and are also common in other European countries. Many of these species are also utilised as medicinal plants. In this manuscript we establish the phytochemical profiles of selected taxa from the Polygonaceae focusing on phenolics. Additionally, we try to find chemophenetic markers for the species investigated. Compounds were detected and characterised based on HPLC-DAD-MS data, quantified, and furtherly analysed using multivariate analyses. Chemophenetic markers were identified also considering previous literature.

Seven undescribed triterpenoids, abikoranes A-G, along with three known triterpenoids were isolated from the leaves of Abies koreana E. H. Wilson. The structures of compounds were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR, HRMS, ECD, specific rotation, and DP4+ analysis. Abikorane A represents the second example of nor-3,4-seco-17,14-friedo-lanostane triterpenoid. Among the isolates, some compounds showed strong cytotoxic activities against some of four tested cancer cell lines (A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, and HCT-116) with the values of IC50 0.89-9.62 μM, inhibited lipopolysaccharide-stimulated nitric oxide production with IC50 values of 11.57-15.16 μM, and exhibited significant nerve growth factor release effect (192.54 ± 12.33%) from C6 glioma cells.

Phytocannabinoids are natural products primarily isolated from Cannabis sativa that exhibit the typical C21 terpenophenolic skeleton. This class of compounds has been shown to be effective in the treatment of various oxidation-related diseases, which has made their antioxidant properties the focus of increasing interest. In the present contribution, the primary antioxidant properties of eight representative phytocannabinoids have been systematically studied against a variety of biologically significant radical species using the density functional theory (DFT) method. The findings demonstrated that phytocannabinoids, in water at physiological pH, exhibit excellent radical scavenging capacity, mainly exerted by the single electron transfer (SET) process from the deprotonated state. In contrast, phytocannabinoids are moderate radical scavengers in non-polar environment via the formal hydrogen atom transfer (fHAT) process. Among the compounds examined, cannabichromene (CBC) and cannabifuran (CBF) had the greatest free radical scavenging capacity in water, surpassing even common antioxidants like BHT and Trolox. CBF is expected to have potent antiradical action toward peroxyl radicals, alkoxy radicals, and nitrogen dioxide in water at physiological pH. These results provide supporting evidence that phytocannabinoids may be useful in scavenging harmful free radicals in physiological environments.

Twelve undescribed megastigmane glycosides, streilicifolosides A-L (1-12), together with 8 known analogues (13-21) were isolated from the leaves of Streblus ilicifolius (S.Vidal) Corner. Their plannar structures were elucidated using extensive NMR spectroscopic methods (1D and 2D-NMR spectroscopy), and HRESIMS spectroscopic data analyses. The absolute configurations of the undescribed compounds were determined by the glucose-induced shift-trend, calculated and experimental circular dichroism spectroscopy. All the compounds were tested for inhibitory effects on the production of NO in LPS-treated RAW264.7 cells, and streilicifoloside E and platanionoside D exhibited potent anti-inflammatory activity comparable to that of the positive control, with IC50 values of 26.33 and 21.84 μM, respectively. Furthermore, these two compounds markedly decreased the secretion of PGE2 and TNF-α and inhibited the expression of COX‒2, iNOS and NF-κB/p65 in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the structure-activity relationships of the isolates were also discussed. The results suggest that streilicifoloside E and platanionoside D could be used as potential candidates for the development of new anti-inflammatory agents.
