Hypertensive crisis (HC) is a life-threatening clinical condition in which an abrupt rise in arterial blood pressure can lead to acute damage to vital organs. The main objective of our study is to determine the epidemiological profile, clinical characteristics, and risk factors of hypertensive crisis patients in Somalia. This study was a prospective cross-sectional study conducted on HC patients attended at Mogadishu Somali Turkish Training and Research Hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia, from November 2020 to April 2021. A total of 6239 patients were screened during the study period. The prevalence of HC was 2.1% (128/6239). Of them, 76 (59.4%) were males. The mean (SD) age of the participants was 56.5 (± 16.9) years (range: 24-98 years). 54.7% (70/128) met the criteria for a hypertensive emergency, while 45.3% (58/128) met the criteria of hypertensive urgency. Most patients (55.5%) took a single antihypertensive medicine, with calcium channel blockers being the most frequently used (57.8%). Headache and palpitation were the most often reported symptoms upon admission (39.1% and 25%). The most often prescribed antihypertensive drugs for the initial therapy included Intravenous furosemide (35.2%), Sublingual captopril (25.8%), intravenous nitroglycerin (23.4%), and intravenous labetalol (20%). Among the forms or patterns of end-organ damage of HE, we most frequently observed acute heart failure (45.7%), acute pulmonary edema (29.9%), and acute renal injury (25.7%). Infrequent medical checkups, poor compliance with medications, poor compliance with exercise, positive family history of hypertension, and being male gender were significant predictors of HC, AOR = 20.312; p < 0.000, AOR = 7.021; p < 0.008, AOR = 6.158; p < 0.017, AOR = 3.545; p < 0.032, and AOR = 2.144; p = 0.001, respectively. In Somalia, the hypertensive crisis is common in this clinic population. Infrequent medical checkups, poor compliance with medications and exercise, positive family history of hypertension, and being male gender were significant predictors of HC.

Although polyploid giant cancer cells (PGCCs) are known as a key source of failure of current therapies, sufficient drugs to target these cells are not yet introduced. Considering the similarities of polyploid cells in regeneration and cancer, we hypothesized that zoledronic acid (ZA), an osteoclast-targeting agent, might be used to eliminate PGCCs. The 5637-bladder cancer cell line was treated with various doses of cisplatin to enrich polyploid cells and the efficacy of different concentrations of ZA in reducing this population was assessed. The metabolic profile of PGCCs was investigated with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Lipid profiles, mitochondrial density, and ROS content were also measured to assess the response of the cells to ZA. Cancer cells surviving after three days of exposure with 6 μM cisplatin were mainly polyploid. These cells demonstrated special morphological features such as fusion with diploid or other polyploid cells and originated in daughter cells through budding. ZA could substantially eradicate PGCCs with the maximal effect observed with 50 μM which resulted in the drop of PGCC fraction from 60 ± 7.5 to 19 ± 1.7%. Enriched PGCCs after cisplatin-treatment demonstrated a drastic metabolic shift compared to untreated cancer cells with an augmentation of lipids. Further assays confirmed the high content of lipid droplets and cholesterol in these cells which were reduced after ZA administration. Additionally, the mitochondrial density and ROS increased in PGCCs both of which declined in response to ZA. Taken together, we propose that ZA is a potent inhibitor of PGCCs which alters the metabolism of PGCCs. Although this drug has been successfully exploited as adjuvant therapy for some malignancies, the current evidence on its effects on PGCCs justifies further trials to assess its potency for improving the success of current therapies for tackling tumor resistance and relapse.

17. Joint modeling of longitudinal change of fasting blood sugar and systolic blood pressure with survival time to death among hypertension patients.

Hypertension is a universal public health challenge and a leading modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and death. It is also called high blood pressure, described by two measured quantities systolic blood pressure (SBP) 140 mmHg or greater and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) 90 mmHg or greater. As the result, this study aims to use the joint model application to identify the factors that affect longitudinal changes in fasting blood sugar, SBP, and survival time to death of hypertension patients and their associations admitted to the Arba Minch General Hospital. We considered a total of 354 random samples of hypertension patients who had under follow-up at Arba Minch general hospital from January 2012 to February 2020. Among 2330 hypertension patients under follow-up, 354 were selected with a simple random sampling technique, and data was collected from the patient's medical cards. After evaluating the longitudinal data with a linear mixed model and the baseline data with Cox proportional models, the joint models of both sub-models were assessed in R software version 4.2. According to the findings, the association between longitudinal changes (FBS, SBP, and time to death in hypertension patients was statistically significant. Ages, place of residence, lifestyle change, stages of hypertension, blood cholesterol level, related diseases, adherence to treatment, family history of hypertension patients, and DBP at baseline were associated factors that affect survival time and longitudinal measurement of FBS and SBP of the patients. The computed association parameters revealed subject-specific values. The subject-specific linear time slope of FBS and SBP was negatively related to the hazard rate of time to death of hypertension patients in Arba Minch general hospital. To reduce the risk of hypertension in patients, health professionals, governmental organizations, and non-governmental organizations must promote the implementation of community-based screening programs for early detection of hypertension.

Water scarcity is a major challenge in the Sahel region of West Africa. Water scarcity in combination with prevalent soil degradation has severely reduced the land productivity in the region. The decrease in resiliency of food security systems of marginalized population has huge societal implications which often leads to mass migrations and conflicts. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and development organizations have made major investments in the Sahel to improve resilience through land rehabilitation activities in recent years. To help restore degraded lands at the farm level, the World Food Programme (WFP) with assistance from USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance supported the construction of water and soil retention structures called half-moons. The vegetation growing in the half-moons is vitally important to increase agricultural productivity and feed animals, a critical element of sustainable food security in the region. This paper investigates the effectiveness of interventions at 18 WFP sites in southern Niger using vegetative greenness observations from the Landsat 7 satellite. The pre - and post-intervention analysis shows that vegetation greenness after the half-moon intervention was nearly 50% higher than in the pre-intervention years. The vegetation in the intervened area was more than 25% greener than the nearby control area. Together, the results indicate that the half-moons are effective adaptations to the traditional land management systems to increase agricultural production in arid ecosystems, which is evident through improved vegetation conditions in southern Niger. The analysis shows that the improvement brought by the interventions continue to provide the benefits. Continued application of these adaptation techniques on a larger scale will increase agricultural production and build resilience to drought for subsistence farmers in West Africa. Quantifiable increase in efficacy of local-scale land and water management techniques, and the resulting jump in large-scale investments to scale similar efforts will help farmers enhance their resiliency in a sustainable manner will lead to a reduction in food security shortages.

Socioeconomic status is an overlooked risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Low family income is a measure of socioeconomic status and may portend greater CVD risk. Therefore, we assessed the association of family income with cardiovascular risk factor and disease burden in American adults. This retrospective analysis included data from participants aged ≥ 20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycles between 2005 and 2018. Family income to poverty ratio (PIR) was calculated by dividing family (or individual) income by poverty guidelines specific to the survey year and used as a measure of socioeconomic status. The association of PIR with the presence of cardiovascular risk factors and CVD as well as cardiac mortality and all-cause mortality was examined. We included 35,932 unweighted participants corresponding to 207,073,472 weighted, nationally representative participants. Participants with lower PIR were often female and more likely to belong to race/ethnic minorities (non-Hispanic Black, Mexican American, other Hispanic). In addition, they were less likely to be married/living with a partner, to attain college graduation or higher, or to have health insurance. In adjusted analyses, the prevalence odds of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary artery disease (CAD), congestive heart failure (CHF), and stroke largely decreased in a step-wise manner from highest (≥ 5) to lowest PIR (< 1). In adjusted analysis, we also noted a mostly dose-dependent association of PIR with the risk of all-cause and cardiac mortality during a mean 5.7 and 5.8 years of follow up, respectively. Our study demonstrates a largely dose-dependent association of PIR with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, CHF, CAD and stroke prevalence as well as incident all-cause mortality and cardiac mortality in a nationally representative sample of American adults. Public policy efforts should be directed to alleviate these disparities to help improve cardiovascular outcomes in vulnerable groups with low family income.

Lung cancer accounts for the most cancer-related deaths in the world. Our previous study suggested the improved survival of lung cancer patients, mainly female patients, with subsequent metachronous primary breast cancer. However, whether the survival advantages of the two primaries are associated with patients' sex and the specific breast cancer is unclear. Whether male lung cancer patients with another primary may encounter the same survival advantage as female patients is also uncertain. The uncertainty hinders these patients from the potential benefit of lung cancer clinical trial. A total of 343 male lung adenocarcinoma patients with subsequent bladder papillary transitional cell carcinoma (LCBC), 1539 lung adenocarcinoma patients with prior bladder papillary transitional cell carcinoma (BCLC), 1181 lung adenocarcinoma patients with subsequent prostate adenocarcinoma (LCPC), 7426 lung adenocarcinoma patients with prior prostate adenocarcinoma (PCLC), and patients with single bladder/prostate/lung (SLC) cancer were identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results. Patients were classified into simultaneous two primary cancer (sTPC), metachronous two primary cancer 1 (mTPC1), or mTPC2 groups when interval time between two cancers was within 6 months, between 7 and 60 months, or over 60 months, respectively. Propensity matching score program was executed to match the two primary cancers with single primary. Cox regression and competing risk regression were performed to identify confounders associated with all-cause and cancer-specific survival, respectively. The major cancer-related and non-cancer-related death in the two primaries were lung cancer and heart disease, respectively. Median overall survival times since lung primary of LCBC and SLC were 97 and 17 months, respectively, and incidence of all-cause and cancer-specific death in LCBC since lung malignancy was significantly lower (Coef. - 1.24, 95% CI - 1.49 to 0.99; SHR 0.42, 95% CI 0.33-0.53). Among the categorized groups, prognosis values of sTPC and mTPC2 groups were not statically different from that of the matched single lung cancer, whereas increased overall survival time and decreased incidence of all-cause and cancer-specific death relative to the matched patients were observed in mTPC1 group (H.R 0.28, 95% CI 0.19-0.41; SHR 0.33, 95% CI 0.23-0.47). Similar prognosis of LCPC relative to SLC was also observed. Furthermore, a generally improved survival relative to SLC was observed in PCLC (median survival times of PCLC and SLC were 17 and 12 months, respectively; Coef. - 0.32, 95% CI - 0.43 to 0.22; SHR 0.77, 95% CI 0.69-0.85), whereas prognosis of BCLC was similar to the matched ones. These results hinted that survival of lung cancer patients might vary with prior cancer history. Further analysis among groups with the two primaries suggested that advanced bladder cancer was not associated with prognosis of patients with LCBC and BCLC. On the contrary, advanced prostate cancer was associated with all-cause and cancer-specific death in patients with PCLC but not in patients with LCPC. Compared with patients with single lung cancer, male lung cancer patients with subsequent bladder/prostate primary over 6 months experienced generally improved survival. These results were similar to our previous study regarding female lung cancer patients with another breast primary. On the contrary, male lung cancer patients with prior primary malignancy encountered varied prognosis: improved survival relative to single lung primary was observed in lung cancer with prior prostate cancer, whereas prognosis of lung cancer with prior bladder cancer was not different. Therefore, great attention was required to characterize prognosis of lung cancer patients with another primary in advance, which was essential to eliminate the potential bias when these patients were included into the clinical trials.

Autoantibodies have been detected in leprosy patients, indicating that infection with M. leprae may lead to autoimmune disorders. However, whether autoimmune response last until patients are cured is unknown. Knowing the autoimmune response in cured leprosy patients is essential to identify whether symptoms are caused by leprosy itself or by other immune-related diseases. This knowledge is essential for the ongoing health management in cured leprosy patients where autoimmune disorders still exist. In our study, we selected six autoantibodies, including anticardiolipin antibody of IgG (ACA), anti-nuclear antibody (ANA), extractable nuclear antigen antibody (ENA), anti-streptolysin O (ASO), anti-double stranded DNA antibody (dsDNA), and rheumatoid factor (RF), that had been reported in leprosy patients as typical autoantibodies. We tested the six typical autoantibodies combined with LACC1, which encodes a protein associated with autoimmune disease such as Crohn's disease and is also the susceptible gene conferring leprosy risk, in cured leprosy patients through ELISA to assess the cured patient's immune status. We observed high positive rates of autoantibodies in cured leprosy patients, and the average plasma levels of five (ACA, ANA, ENA, ASO, and RF) out of the six autoantibodies were significantly higher in cured leprosy patients than in controls. The positive detection of autoantibodies is independent of the recovery period. Moreover, the level of these autoantibodies showed a strong positive correlation with the level of LACC1 in both controls and cured patients. This study showed that there is long-term autoimmunological activation in leprosy patients, even after decades of recovery. Autoimmune responses may influence the development and prognosis of leprosy. Special care should be given to posttreatment or cured leprosy patients regarding long-term autoimmunological activation.

For reef framework to persist, calcium carbonate production by corals and other calcifiers needs to outpace loss due to physical, chemical, and biological erosion. This balance is both delicate and dynamic and is currently threatened by the effects of ocean warming and acidification. Although the protection and recovery of ecosystem functions are at the center of most restoration and conservation programs, decision makers are limited by the lack of predictive tools to forecast habitat persistence under different emission scenarios. To address this, we developed a modelling approach, based on carbonate budgets, that ties species-specific responses to site-specific global change using the latest generation of climate models projections (CMIP6). We applied this model to Cheeca Rocks, an outlier in the Florida Keys in terms of high coral cover, and explored the outcomes of restoration targets scheduled in the coming 20 years at this site by the Mission: Iconic Reefs restoration initiative. Additionally, we examined the potential effects of coral thermal adaptation by increasing the bleaching threshold by 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2˚C. Regardless of coral adaptative capacity or restoration, net carbonate production at Cheeca Rocks declines heavily once the threshold for the onset of annual severe bleaching is reached. The switch from net accretion to net erosion, however, is significantly delayed by mitigation and adaptation. The maintenance of framework accretion until 2100 and beyond is possible under a decreased emission scenario coupled with thermal adaptation above 0.5˚C. Although restoration initiatives increase reef accretion estimates, Cheeca Rocks will only be able to keep pace with future sea-level rise in a world where anthropogenic CO2 emissions are reduced. Present results, however, attest to the potential of restoration interventions combined with increases in coral thermal tolerance to delay the onset of mass bleaching mortalities, possibly in time for a low-carbon economy to be implemented and complementary mitigation measures to become effective.

The association between dietary nutrient patterns (NPs) and metabolic health status has not been investigated in adolescents. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between NPs and metabolic health status in Iranian adolescents with overweight and obesity. In this cross-sectional study, 203 obese/overweight adolescents were selected using a multistage mass random sampling method. To assess usual dietary intakes, a validated food frequency questionnaire was applied. Data of anthropometric and blood pressure were collected. Insulin, lipid profile, and glucose levels were determined using fasting blood samples. Two approaches [International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and a combination of IDF with Homeostasis Model Assessment Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR)] were applied to identify metabolically healthy obese and metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO) adolescents. Participants had a mean age of 13.9 ± 1.61 years and 52.2% of them were girls. Three NPs were identified and labeled as "high minerals and vitamins" (NP1), "high carbohydrate" (NP2) and "high fat and sodium" (NP3). After adjustments for all potential confounders, no significant association was observed between higher adherence to NP1 and NP2 and odds of MUO; however, greater adherence to "high fat and sodium" NP was associated with higher odds of being MUO based on IDF (OR = 3.12; 95% CI 1.19, 8.09) and IDF/HOMA-IR (OR = 2.81; 95% CI 1.02, 7.74) definitions. Stratified analysis revealed that these associations were stronger in boys (versus girls) and obese (versus overweight) adolescents. In conclusion, high adherence to a "high fat and sodium" nutrient pattern was related to elevated chance of being MUO in Iranian adolescents, especially in boys and obese individuals. Therefore, less consumption of trans fatty acids, saturated fatty acids and sodium could be recommended to prevent MUO prevalence especially in boys with obesity.

Ocular neovascular diseases including neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nvAMD) are widespread causes of blindness. Patients' non-responsiveness to currently used biologics that target vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) poses an unmet need for novel therapies. Here, we identify protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) as a novel therapeutic target for nvAMD. PRMT5 is a well-known epigenetic enzyme. We previously showed that PRMT5 methylates and activates a proangiogenic and proinflammatory transcription factor, the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), which has a master role in tumor progression, notably in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and colorectal cancer. We identified a potent and specific small molecule inhibitor of PRMT5, PR5-LL-CM01, that dampens the methylation and activation of NF-κB. Here for the first time, we assessed the antiangiogenic activity of PR5-LL-CM01 in ocular cells. Immunostaining of human nvAMD sections revealed that PRMT5 is highly expressed in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)/choroid where neovascularization occurs, while mouse eyes with laser induced choroidal neovascularization (L-CNV) showed PRMT5 is overexpressed in the retinal ganglion cell layer and in the RPE/choroid. Importantly, inhibition of PRMT5 by PR5-LL-CM01 or shRNA knockdown of PRMT5 in human retinal endothelial cells (HRECs) and induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived choroidal endothelial cells (iCEC2) reduced NF-κB activity and the expression of its target genes, such as tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and VEGF-A. In addition to inhibiting angiogenic properties of proliferation and tube formation, PR5-LL-CM01 blocked cell cycle progression at G1/S-phase in a dose-dependent manner in these cells. Thus, we provide the first evidence that inhibition of PRMT5 impedes angiogenesis in ocular endothelial cells, suggesting PRMT5 as a potential therapeutic target to ameliorate ocular neovascularization.

The key to most subsurface processes is to determine how structural and topological features at small length scales, i.e., the microstructure, control the effective and macroscopic properties of earth materials. Recent progress in imaging technology has enabled us to visualise and characterise microstructures at different length scales and dimensions. However, one limitation of these technologies is the trade-off between resolution and sample size (or representativeness). A promising approach to this problem is image reconstruction which aims to generate statistically equivalent microstructures but at a larger scale and/or additional dimension. In this work, a stochastic method and three generative adversarial networks (GANs), namely deep convolutional GAN (DCGAN), Wasserstein GAN with gradient penalty (WGAN-GP), and StyleGAN2 with adaptive discriminator augmentation (ADA), are used to reconstruct two-dimensional images of two hydrothermally rocks with varying degrees of complexity. For the first time, we evaluate and compare the performance of these methods using multi-point spatial correlation functions-known as statistical microstructural descriptors (SMDs)-ultimately used as external tools to the loss functions. Our findings suggest that a well-trained GAN can reconstruct higher-order, spatially-correlated patterns of complex earth materials, capturing underlying structural and morphological properties. Comparing our results with a stochastic reconstruction method based on a two-point correlation function, we show the importance of coupling training/assessment of GANs with higher-order SMDs, especially in the case of complex microstructures. More importantly, by quantifying original and reconstructed microstructures via different GANs, we highlight the interpretability of these SMDs and show how they can provide valuable insights into the spatial patterns in the synthetic images, allowing us to detect common artefacts and failure cases in training GANs.

130. Investigation of respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) and respirable crystalline silica (RCS) in the U.S. underground and surface coal mines.

Dust is an inherent byproduct of mining activities that raises notable health and safety concerns. Cumulative inhalation of respirable coal mine dust (RCMD) and respirable crystalline silica (RCS) can lead to obstructive lung diseases. Despite considerable efforts to reduce dust exposure by decreasing the permissible exposure limits (PEL) and improving the monitoring techniques, the rate of mine workers with respiratory diseases is still high. The root causes of the high prevalence of respiratory diseases remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate contributing factors in RCMD and RCS dust concentrations in both surface and underground mines. To this end, a data management approach is performed on MSHA's database between 1989 and 2018 using SQL data management. In this process, all data were grouped by mine ID, and then, categories of interests were defined to conduct statistical analysis using the generalized estimating equation (GEE) model. The total number of 12,537 and 9050 observations for respirable dust concentration are included, respectively, in the U.S. underground and surface mines. Several variables were defined in four categories of interest including mine type, geographic location, mine size, and coal seam height. Hypotheses were developed for each category based on the research model and were tested using multiple linear regression analysis. The results of the analysis indicate higher RCMD concentration in underground compared to RCS concentration which is found to be relatively higher in surface coal mines. In addition, RCMD concentration is seen to be higher in the Interior region while RCS is higher in the Appalachia region. Moreover, mines of small sizes show lower RCMD and higher RCS concentrations. Finally, thin-seam coal has greater RCMD and RCS concentrations compared to thicker seams in both underground and surface mines. In the end, it is demonstrated that RCMD and RCS concentrations in both surface and underground mines have decreased. Therefore, further research is needed to investigate the efficacy of the current mass-concentration-based monitoring system.

131. Environmental ranking of European industrial facilities by toxicity and global warming potentials.

We present a methodology to develop the integrated toxicity and climate change risk assessment of Europe based facilities, industries and regions. There is an increasingly important need for large scale sustainability measurement solutions for company reporting with high granularity. In this paper we measure key aspects of Sustainable Development Goals in terms of human, cancer and non-cancer toxicity, ecotoxicity together with global warming impact potentials from point source pollutant releases of more than 10,000 companies and their 33,000 facilities in Europe from 2001 to 2017, by using the European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register. For our assessment, we deploy a scientific consensus model, USEtox for characterizing human and ecotoxicological impacts of chemicals and the global warming potential values from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. We discuss water and air emissions of dozens of pollutants in urban, rural, coastal and inland areas. Companies in the electricity production sector are estimated to have the largest human toxicity impact potential (46% of total) and the largest global warming impact potential (50%), while companies in the sewerage sector have the largest ecotoxicity impact potential (50%). In the overall economy, the correlation between facilities' global warming and toxicity impact potentials is positive, however, not very strong. Therefore, we argue that carbon footprint of industrial organizations can be only used as a climate change risk indicator, but not as an overall environmental performance indicator. We confirm impact potentials of major pollutants in previous research papers (Hg accounting for 76% of the total human toxicity and Zn accounting for 68% of total ecotoxicity), although we draw the attention to the limitations of USEtox in case of metals. From 2001 to 2017 total human toxicity dropped by 28%, although the downward trend reversed in 2016. Ecotoxicity and global warming impact potentials remained unchanged in the same period. Finally, we show that the European pollutant release monitoring data quality could be further improved, as only three quarters of the toxic releases are measured in the Member States of the European Union, and a high share of toxic pollutant releases are only estimated in some countries. Of the measured or calculated toxic releases, only one third is reported according to the most robust CEN/ISO standards and about one fifth according to the least preferred other methods, like engineering judgements.

Esophageal biomechanical studies are being performed to understand structural changes resulting from stretches during repair of esophageal atresias as well as to obtain biomechanical values for tissue-engineered esophagus. The present study offers insights into ultrastructural changes after stretching of the ovine esophagus using uniaxial stretch tests. In vitro uniaxial stretching was performed on esophagi (n = 16) obtained from the abattoir within 4-6 h of 1-month-old lambs. Esophagi were divided into 4 groups (4 esophagi/group): control, Group1 (G1), Group2 (G2), Group3 (G3) stretched to 20%, 30% and 40% of their original length respectively. Force and lengthening were measured with 5 cycles performed on every specimen. Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) studies were performed on the 4 groups. During observational TEM study of the control group there were no significant differences in muscle cell structure or extracellular matrix. In all stretched groups varying degrees of alterations were identified. The degree of damage correlated linearly with the increasing level of stretch. Distance between the cells showed significant difference between the groups (control (μ = 0.41 μm, SD = 0.26), G1 (μ = 1.36 μm, SD = 1.21), G2 (μ = 2.8 μm, SD = 1.83), and G3 (μ = 3.01 μm, SD = 2.06). The diameter of the cells (control μ = 19.87 μm, SD = 3.81; G1 μ = 20.38 μm, SD = 4.45; G2 μ = 21.7 μm, SD = 6.58; G3 μ = 24.48 μm, SD = 6.69) and the distance between myofibrils (control μ = 0.23 μm, SD = 0.08; G1 μ = 0.27 μm, SD = 0.08; G2 μ = 0.4 μm, SD = 0.15; G3 μ = 0.61 μm, SD = 0.2) were significantly different as well ( p < 0.05 was considered to be significant). Esophageal stretching > 30% alters the regular intracellular and extracellular structure of the esophageal muscle and leads to disruption of intra- and extracellular bonds. These findings could provide valuable insights into alterations in the microscopic structure of the esophagus in esophageal atresias repaired under tension as well as the basis for mechanical characterization for tissue engineering of the esophagus.

Human activities, including urbanization, industrialization, agricultural pollution, and land use, have contributed to the increased fragmentation of natural habitats and decreased biodiversity in Zhejiang Province as a result of socioeconomic development. Numerous studies have demonstrated that the protection of ecologically significant species can play a crucial role in restoring biodiversity. Emeia pseudosauteri is regarded as an excellent environmental indicator, umbrella and flagship species because of its unique ecological attributes and strong public appeal. Assessing and predicting the potential suitable distribution area of this species in Zhejiang Province can help in the widespread conservation of biodiversity. We used the MaxEnt ecological niche model to evaluate the habitat suitability of E. pseudosauteri in Zhejiang Province to understand the potential distribution pattern and environmental characteristics of suitable habitats for this species, and used the AUC (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve) and TSS (true skill statistics) to evaluate the model performance. The results showed that the mean AUC value was 0.985, the standard deviation was 0.011, the TSS average value was 0.81, and the model prediction results were excellent. Among the 11 environmental variables used for modeling, temperature seasonality (Bio_4), altitude (Alt) and distance to rivers (Riv_dis) were the key variables affecting the distribution area of E. pseudosauteri, with contributions of 33.5%, 30% and 15.9%, respectively. Its main suitable distribution area is in southern Zhejiang Province and near rivers, at an altitude of 50-300 m, with a seasonal variation in temperature of 7.7-8 °C. Examples include the Ou River, Nanxi River, Wuxi River, and their tributary watersheds. This study can provide a theoretical basis for determining the scope of E. pseudosauteri habitat protection, population restoration, resource management and industrial development in local areas.

Due to digitalization, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have significantly enhanced their efficiency and productivity in the past few years. The process to automate SME transaction execution is getting highly multifaceted as the number of stakeholders of SMEs is connecting, accessing, exchanging, adding, and changing the transactional executions. The balanced lifecycle of SMEs requires partnership exchanges, financial management, manufacturing, and productivity stabilities, along with privacy and security. Interoperability platform issue is another critical challenging aspect while designing and managing a secure distributed Peer-to-Peer industrial development environment for SMEs. However, till now, it is hard to maintain operations of SMEs' integrity, transparency, reliability, provenance, availability, and trustworthiness between two different enterprises due to the current nature of centralized server-based infrastructure. This paper bridges these problems and proposes a novel and secure framework with a standardized process hierarchy/lifecycle for distributed SMEs using collaborative techniques of blockchain, the internet of things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI) with machine learning (ML). A blockchain with IoT-enabled permissionless network structure is designed called "B-SMEs" that provides solutions to cross-chain platforms. In this, B-SMEs address the lightweight stakeholder authentication problems as well. For that purpose, three different chain codes are deployed. It handles participating SMEs' registration, day-to-day information management and exchange between nodes, and analysis of partnership exchange-related transaction details before being preserved on the blockchain immutable storage. Whereas AI-enabled ML-based artificial neural networks are utilized, the aim is to handle and optimize day-to-day numbers of SME transactions; so that the proposed B-SMEs consume fewer resources in terms of computational power, network bandwidth, and preservation-related issues during the complete process of SMEs service deliverance. The simulation results present highlight the benefits of B-SMEs, increases the rate of ledger management and optimization while exchanging information between different chains, which is up to 17.3%, and reduces the consumption of the system's computational resources down to 9.13%. Thus, only 14.11% and 7.9% of B-SME's transactions use network bandwidth and storage capabilities compared to the current mechanism of SMEs, respectively.

Stress is identified as a cause of transient hyperprolactinemia, whereas venipuncture is considered a source of stress for patient. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of venipuncture-induced stress with elevation of serum prolactin. This was a cross-sectional observational study conducted on a group of 150 outdoor patients visiting a tertiary care hospital. Serial sampling was performed by drawing venous blood at different time intervals (0, 30 and 60 min) by single venipuncture to measure serum prolactin to diagnose stress-induced hyperprolactinemia. The study was conducted in two phases, namely, Phase 1 and Phase 2, at different times. The Phase 1 results were divided into two groups: Group 1 (0 min) and Group 5 (pool prepared from samples collected at 0 + 30 + 60 min). Likewise, the results of Phase 2 were segregated into five groups; Group 1 (0 min), Group 2 (30 min), Group 3 (60 min), Group 4 (average of three groups), and Group 5 (pool from samples collected at 0 + 30 + 60 min). In both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the study, there was a statistically significant (p = 0.0003 in Phase 1 and p = 0.02 in Phase 2) decrease in the mean prolactin (17.99 ± 24.76 ng/mL in Phase 1 and 19.61 ± 23.42 ng/mL in Phase 2) in the pooled samples (Group 5) in comparison to the mean prolactin (19.67 ± 27.69 ng/mL in Phase 1 and 21.06 ± 25.06 ng/mL in Phase 2) of the serum collected at 0 h (Group 1). There was no significant difference in the mean prolactin measured from the pooled samples and average prolactin calculated after individual testing from each sample collected at 0 h, 30 min and 60 min. Venipuncture-triggered fear and apprehension may result in transient hyperprolactinemia. In comparison to performing multiple testing on the samples collected at different time intervals and determining the mean, measurement of the analyte from the pooled serum is the better alternative as it can conserve both time and resources.

An optimization approach based on full factorial design was employed for developing an HPLC-UV method for simultaneous determination of a quaternary mixture used for the treatment of symptoms related to common cold and COVID-19. The quaternary mixture is composed of paracetamol, levocetirizine dihydrochloride, phenylephrine hydrochloride and ambroxol hydrochloride. The developed technique is a green, fast and simple method that uses isocratic elution of mobile phase consisting of 20:5:75 (v/v) of ethanol: acetonitrile: 2.5 mM heptane-1-sulphonic acid sodium salt at pH 6.5 [Formula: see text] 0.02. The chromatographic separation was carried out using Hypersil BDS Cyano LC Column (250 × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) with 230 nm UV detection and 1.0 mL/min. flow rate. Avoiding the routine methodology and resorting to the modern technology-represented in the usage of experimental design-allows rapid determination of the four drugs using the optimum quantity of chemicals to avoid any waste of resources. The quaternary mixture was eluted in less than 9 min., where retention times of paracetamol, levocetirizine dihydrochloride, phenylephrine hydrochloride and ambroxol hydrochloride were found to be 2.2, 3.8, 6.6 and 8.8 min., respectively. The calibration graphs of the four drugs were linear over concentration ranges of 50.0-500.0, 0.5-20.0, 0.5-20.0 and 0.5-100.0 µg/mL for paracetamol, levocetirizine dihydrochloride, phenylephrine hydrochloride and ambroxol hydrochloride, respectively with correlation coefficients higher than 0.999. The method is accurate with mean recoveries between 99.87 and 100.04%, precise, as %RSD for the intraday and interday precision were between 0.61 and 1.64% and very sensitive with limit of detections (LOD)'s between 29 and 147 ng/mL and limit of quantification (LOQ)'s between 95 and 485 ng/mL. The proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of the four drugs either in raw materials or in prepared tablet with the least amount of chemicals within short time. It is also validated following International Conference on Harmonization Guidelines. The proposed method was found to be green according to the most common greenness assessment tools; NEMI, GAPI, Analytical Eco-Scale and AGREE methods. The advantages of the proposed method qualify it for routine analysis of the studied drugs either in single or co-formulated dosage form in quality control labs.

An unbiased and accurate diagnosis of benign and malignant endometrial lesions is essential for the gynecologist, as each type might require distinct treatment. Radiomics is a quantitative method that could facilitate deep mining of information and quantification of the heterogeneity in images, thereby aiding clinicians in proper lesion diagnosis. The aim of this study is to develop an appropriate predictive model for the classification of benign and malignant endometrial lesions, and evaluate potential clinical applicability of the model. 139 patients with pathologically-confirmed endometrial lesions from January 2018 to July 2020 in two independent centers (center A and B) were finally analyzed. Center A was used for training set, while center B was used for test set. The lesions were manually drawn on the largest slice based on the lesion area by two radiologists. After feature extraction and feature selection, the possible associations between radiomics features and clinical parameters were assessed by Uni- and multi- variable logistic regression. The receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve and DeLong validation were employed to evaluate the possible predictive performance of the models. Decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to evaluate the net benefit of the radiomics nomogram. A radiomics prediction model was established from the 15 selected features, and were found to be relatively high discriminative on the basis of the area under the ROC curve (AUC) for both the training and the test cohorts (AUC = 0.90 and 0.85, respectively). The radiomics nomogram also showed good performance of discrimination for both the training and test cohorts (AUC = 0.91 and 0.86, respectively), and the DeLong test shows that AUCs were significantly different between clinical parameters and nomogram. The result of DCA demonstrated the clinical usefulness of this novel nomogram method. The predictive model constructed based on MRI radiomics and clinical parameters indicated a highly diagnostic efficiency, thereby implying its potential clinical usefulness for the precise identification and prediction of endometrial lesions.

With global progress towards malaria reduction stalling, further analysis of epidemiology is required, particularly in countries with the highest burden. National surveys have mostly analysed infection prevalence, while large-scale data on parasite density and different developmental forms rarely available. In Nigeria, the country with the largest burden globally, blood slide microscopy of children up to 5 years of age was conducted in the 2018 National Demographic and Health Survey, and parasite prevalence previously reported. In the current study, malaria parasite density measurements are reported and analysed for 7783 of the children sampled across the 36 states within the six geopolitical zones of the country. Asexual and sexual stages, and infections with different malaria parasite species are analysed. Across all states of Nigeria, there was a positive correlation between mean asexual parasite density within infected individuals and prevalence of infection in the community (Spearman's rho = 0.39, P = 0.02). Asexual parasite densities were highest in the northern geopolitical zones (geometric means > 2000 μL-1), extending the evidence of exceptionally high infection burden in many areas. Sexual parasite prevalence in each state was highly correlated with asexual parasite prevalence (Spearman's rho = 0.70, P < 0.001), although sexual parasite densities were low (geometric means < 100 μL-1 in all zones). Infants had lower parasite densities than children above 1 year of age, but there were no differences between male and female children. Most infections were of P. falciparum, which had higher asexual densities but lower sexual parasite densities than P. malariae or P. ovale mono-infections. However, mixed species infections had the highest asexual parasite densities. It is recommended that future large surveys in high burden countries measure parasite densities as well as developmental stages and species, to improve the quality of malaria epidemiology and tracking of future changes.

Vascular endothelial barrier dysfunction is the most prominent manifestation and important cause of mortality in infectious acute lung injury (ALI). Exogenous apelin is effective in ameliorating lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory response in ALI lungs, reducing exudation of lung tissue and decreasing mortality. This study set out to investigate the association between apelin and Friend leukemia integration-1 (Fli-1) in the prevention and treatment of ALI, and to elucidate the molecular mechanism by which apelin protects the permeability of the vascular endothelial barrier. At the vivo functional level, lung wet/dry weight ratio was used to detect whole lung permeability, evans blue assay and dual fluorescent protein tracking assay were used to detect lung vascular endothelial permeability, HE staining to observe the inflammatory status of lung tissue, and immunofluorescence staining for VE-cadherin expression levels in blood vessels. The changes in inflammatory factors in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were detected by ELASA. Western blot was used to detect the expression level of proteins. qRT-PCR was performed to detect changes in mRNA expression of Fli-1 and adherent junction-related proteins. The correlation analysis of Fli-1 with vascular endothelial permeability and SRC showed that Fli-1 participated in the process of ALI. After preventive and therapeutic treatment of ALI mice with exogenous apelin, Fli-1, APJ, VE-cadherin, phosphorylated-VE-cadherin (p-VE-cadherin) and β-catenin were up-regulated, while SRC, phosphorylated-SRC (p-SRC), VEGF and VEGF-R were down-regulated, which indicated that the stability of vascular endothelial barrier was enhanced. With the use of Fli-1 inhibitor irinotecan, the protective effect of apelin was weakened in various functional indexes, genes and proteins. The lung was maintained at the level of the injury. Our research shows that Fli-1 is involved in the LPS-induced ALI process. The molecular mechanism for apelin in preventing endothelial barrier dysfunction in ALI is through up-regulating Fli-1, thus regulating adherens junction-related proteins, and finally recovering the endothelial barrier function.

Patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) had been confirmed to have immune dysfunction and were prone to invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), which was directly related to the increased mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictors for IPA in SFTS patients, and the results were expected to be helpful for early identification of IPA and initiation of anti-fungal therapy. The study was performed to review laboratory confirmed SFTS patients in two tertiary hospitals in Shandong province (Qilu Hospital of Shandong University and Shandong Public Health Clinical Center) from April 2021 to August 2022. The enrolled patients were further divided into IPA group and non-IPA group. Demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations and laboratory parameters between IPA group and non-IPA group patients were analyzed and compared to identify the independent predictors for IPA by univariate analysis and multivariable logistic regression analysis. Sensitivity and specificity of independent predictors were evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. In total, 67 SFTS patients were enrolled with an average age of 64.7 (± 8.4) years old. The incidence of IPA was 32.8% (22/67). Mortality of patients in IPA group was 27.3% (6/22), which was significantly higher than that in non-IPA group. Results of univariate analysis showed that uncontrolled diabetes, central nervous system symptoms, platelet < 40 × 109/L, CD4+ T cell < 300/μL and CD8+ T cell < 400/μL were risk factors for development of IPA. These factors were further analyzed by multivariable logistic regression analysis and the results indicated that uncontrolled diabetes, platelet < 40 × 109/L, CD4+ T cell < 300/μL and CD8+ T cell < 400/μL could be recognized as independent predictors for IPA in SFTS patients. In conclusion, IPA is a serious complication for SFTS patients and increases mortality. It is necessary to early identify predictors of IPA for improving survival of SFTS patients.

Mortality is a frequently reported outcome in clinical studies of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, timing of mortality assessment has not been well characterized. We aimed to identify a crossing-point between cumulative survival and death in the intensive care unit (ICU) of patients with moderate-to-severe ARDS, beyond which the number of survivors would exceed the number of deaths. We hypothesized that this intersection would occur earlier in a successful clinical trial vs. observational studies of moderate/severe ARDS and predict treatment response. We conducted an ancillary study of 1580 patients with moderate-to-severe ARDS managed with lung-protective ventilation to assess the relevance and timing of measuring ICU mortality rates at different time-points during ICU stay. First, we analyzed 1303 patients from four multicenter, observational cohorts enrolling consecutive patients with moderate/severe ARDS. We assessed cumulative ICU survival from the time of moderate/severe ARDS diagnosis to ventilatory support discontinuation within 7-days, 28-days, 60-days, and at ICU discharge. Then, we compared these findings to those of a successful randomized trial of 277 moderate/severe ARDS patients. In the observational cohorts, ICU mortality (487/1303, 37.4%) and 28-day mortality (425/1102, 38.6%) were similar (p = 0.549). Cumulative proportion of ICU survivors and non-survivors crossed at day-7; after day-7, the number of ICU survivors was progressively higher compared to non-survivors. Measures of oxygenation, lung mechanics, and severity scores were different between survivors and non-survivors at each point-in-time (p < 0.001). In the trial cohort, the cumulative proportion of survivors and non-survivors in the treatment group crossed before day-3 after diagnosis of moderate/severe ARDS. In clinical ARDS studies, 28-day mortality closely approximates and may be used as a surrogate for ICU mortality. For patients with moderate-to-severe ARDS, ICU mortality assessment within the first week of a trial might be an early predictor of treatment response.

This article studied a numerical estimation of the double-diffusive peristaltic flow of a non-Newtonian Sisko nanofluid through a porous medium inside a horizontal symmetric flexible channel under the impact of Joule heating, nonlinear thermal radiation, viscous dissipation, and heat generation/absorption in presence of heat and mass convection, considering effects of the Brownian motion and the thermophoresis coefficients. On the other hand, the long wave approximation was used to transform the nonlinear system of partial differential equations into a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations which were later solved numerically using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method with shooting technique using MATLAB package program code. The effects of all physical parameters resulting from this study on the distributions of velocity, temperature, solutal concentration, and nanoparticles volume fraction inside the fluid were studied in addition to a study of the pressure gradients using the 2D and 3D graphs that were made for studying the impact of some parameters on the behavior of the streamlines graphically within the channel with a mention of their physical meaning. Finally, some of the results of this study showed that the effect of Darcy number [Formula: see text] and the magnetic field parameter [Formula: see text] is opposite to the effect of the rotation parameter [Formula: see text] on the velocity distribution whereas, the two parameters nonlinear thermal radiation [Formula: see text] and the ratio temperature [Formula: see text] works on a decrease in the temperature distribution and an increase in both the solutal concentration distribution, and the nanoparticle's volume fraction. Finally, the impact of the rotation parameter [Formula: see text] on the distribution of pressure gradients was positive, but the effect of both Darcy number [Formula: see text] and the magnetic field parameter [Formula: see text] on the same distribution was negative. The results obtained have been compared with the previous results obtained that agreement if the new parameters were neglected and indicate the phenomenon's importance in diverse fields.

Stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD) is a type of cancer which often at itsadvanced stage apon diagnosis and mortality in clinical practice. Several factors influencethe prognosis of STAD, including the expression and regulation of immune cells in the tumor microenvironment. We here investigated the biomarkers related to the diagnosis and prognosis of gastric cancer, hoping to provide insights for the diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer in the future. STAD and normal patient RNA sequencing data sets were accessed from the cancer genome atlas (TCGA database). Differential genes were determined and obtained by using the R package DESeq2. The stromal, immune, and ESTIMATE scores are calculated by the ESTIMATE algorithm, followed by the modular genes screening using the R package WGCNA. Subsequently, the intersection between the modular gene and the differential gene was taken and the STRING database was used for PPI network module analysis. The R packages clusterProfiler, enrichplot, and ggplot2 were used for GO and KEGG enrichment analysis. Cox regression analysis was used to screen survival-related genes, and finally, the R package Venn Diagram was used to take the intersection and obtain 7 hub genes. The time-dependent ROC curve and Kaplan-Meier survival curve were used to find the SERPINE1 gene, which plays a critical role in prognosis. Finally, the expression pattern, clinical characteristics, and regulatory mechanism of SERPINE1 were analyzed in STAD. We revealed that the expression of SERPINE1 was significantly increased in the samples from STAD compared with normal samples. Cox regression, time-dependent ROC, and Kaplan-Meier survival analyses demonstrated that SERPINE1 was significantly related to the adverse prognosis of STAD patients. The expression of SERPINE1 increased with the progression of T, N, and M classification of the tumor. In addition, the results of immune infiltration analysis indicated that the immune cells' expression were higher in high SERPINE1 expression group than that in low SERPINE1 expression group, including CD4+ T cells, B cells, CD8+ T cells, macrophages, neutrophils and other immune cells. SERPINE1 was closely related to immune cells in the STAD immune microenvironment and had a synergistic effect with the immune checkpoints PD1 and PD-L1. In conclusion, we proved that SERPINE1 is a promising prognostic and diagnostic biomarker for STAD and a potential target for immunotherapy.

To compare the clinical efficacy of an innovative modified single-incision technique without special extraperitoneal PORT with that of transperitoneal multi-incision robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and to explore the feasibility and safety of the former. A retrospective analysis was performed on 259 patients who received robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in the Robot Minimally Invasive Center of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital between September 2018 and August 2021. Among them were 147 cases involving extraperitoneal single incision with no special PORT (Group A) and 112 cases involving multiple incisions by the transperitoneal method (Group B). Differences in age, PSA level, Gleason score, prostate volume, body mass index, clinical stage, lower abdominal operation history, and lymph node dissection ratio between the two groups were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). All operations were performed by the same operator. In this study, all 259 operations were completed successfully, and there was no conversion. There was no significant difference in transperitoneal blood loss, postoperative hospital stay, positive rate of incision margin, indwelling time of urinary catheter, satisfaction rate of immediate urine control, satisfaction rate of urine control 3 months after operation, positive rate of postoperative lymph node pathology or postoperative pathological stage between the two groups (P > 0.05). There were significant differences in operation time, postoperative exhaust time and incision length (P < 0.05). The modified extraperitoneal nonspecial PORT single-incision technique is safe and feasible for robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, and its curative effect is similar to that of transperitoneal multi-incision RARP. It has the advantages of a short operation time, less impact on the gastrointestinal tract and a more beautiful incision. The long-term effect of treatment needs to be further confirmed by prospective studies.

Information on the pattern of acute poisonings in hospitals of Birjand city, Iran, is limited. This study aimed to address this knowledge gap by examining the admissions in a major poisoning center in eastern Iran. This cross-sectional study included patients admitted to the Imam Reza Hospital in Birjand over 12 months. Medical records of the poisoned patients were reviewed, and the study variables were used for data analysis. During the study period, 534 cases of acute poisonings were evaluated. The patient's ages ranged from 12 to 84 years, with a high rate of poisonings between 15 and 35 years. The female predominance in poisoning cases was 52.1%. Most cases of poisonings occurred in spring, and the common route of exposure was oral (93.1%). The incidence of poisoning in married couples, uneducated patients, and residents of urban areas was 56.5%, 90.1%, and 74.6%, respectively. Patients with a previous medical history experienced addiction and psychiatric disorders. Intentional poisoning accounted for 23.4% of acute poisoning cases referred to the hospital in the current study. The main groups of toxicants were pharmaceutical products (48.1%), narcotics (25.8%), chemical products (10.1%), envenomation (7.1%), and alcohol (1.7%). The mean hospital stay was 2.5 ± 3.0 days, and the final treatment outcome was complete recovery, except for one patient intoxicated by warfarin and alprazolam. Our results indicate that the high toxicity cases were related to pharmaceutical product and opioids abuse, especially methadone (8.4%), alprazolam (7.9%), clonazepam (7.5%), and acetaminophen (9.9%) taken orally and more commonly happened at home. Due to the high rate of deliberate poisonings, especially among young adults and students, monitoring drug distribution and exceptional attention to mental health should be seriously considered by national health authorities to prevent suicide attempts.

Aflatoxin M2 (AFM2) is a type of mycotoxin detected in milk or dairy products from animals consuming contaminated feed. In this study, the toxicity mechanism of AFM2 and the protective effects of quercetin were investigated in albino mice. For this purpose, the mice were divided into 6 groups and the groups were fed with quercetin and AFM2. The toxic effects of AFM2 and the protective properties of quercetin were investigated using physiological, biochemical and cytogenetic parameters. The genotoxic mechanism of AFM2 and the protective role of quercetin were investigated by molecular docking, which is an in silico model. As a result, 16 mg/kg b.w AFM2 administration caused serious changes in body weight, organ index, kidney and liver weight, and deterioration of antioxidant/oxidant balance in liver and kidney organs. The decrease in glutathione levels along with an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the liver and kidney after AFM2 administration indicates that oxidative stress is induced. The increases in alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartat transaminase (AST) levels, which are indicators of liver damage, and the increases in serum levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine, which are indicators of kidney damage, confirm the damage in both organs. AFM2 also caused genotoxicity by inducing micronucleus (MN) and chromosomal abnormalities (CAs) in bone marrow tissue. It has been determined that AFM2, which exhibits genotoxicity as a result of its clastogenic and aneugenic effects, causes CAs by interacting with DNA. Quercetin provided significant protection by improving liver and kidney tissues, partial normalization in serum parameter levels, and severe reductions in MN and CAs. The highest protection was determined as 74.1% against dicentric chromosome formations in 50 mg/kg b.w quercetin application. The interaction of quercetin with xanthine oxidase and nitric oxide synthase enzymes was determined in silico with an inhibition constant in the range of 283.71-476.17 nM. These interactions cause changes in the activity of enzymes, reducing the oxidative load in the cell, and in this way, quercetin provides protection. All toxic effects induced by AFM2 were decreased with quercetin administration dose-dependently, and this protective effect was associated with quercetin's reduction of oxidative load by inhibiting the free radical-producing enzyme. All toxic effects caused by AFM2 were decreased with quercetin administration in a dose-dependent manner, and this protective effect was associated with quercetin's reduction of oxidative load by inhibiting the enzyme that produces free radicals.

Postoperative arrhythmias (PAs) are common events and have been widely investigated in cardiothoracic surgery. Within visceral surgery, a recent study revealed a significant occurrence of PA in esophageal resections. In contrast, PA in lower gastrointestinal surgery is rarely investigated and has been rudimentary described in the medical literature. The present work is a retrospective cohort study of 1171 patients who underwent surgery of lower gastrointestinal tract between 2012 and 2018. All included patients were treated and monitored in the intensive care unit (ICU) or intermediate care unit (IMC) after surgery. Follow-up, performed between January and May 2021, was obtained for the patients with PA investigating the possible persistence of PA and complications such as permanent arrhythmia or thromboembolic events after discharge. In total, n = 1171 patients (559 female, 612 male) without any history of prior arrhythmia were analyzed. Overall, PA occurred in n = 56 (4.8%) patients after surgery of the lower GI. The highest incidence of PA was seen in patients undergoing bowel surgery after mesenteric ischaemia (26.92%), followed by cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC; 16.67%). PA was significantly associated with higher age (72 years (IQR 63-78 years) vs. 64 years (IQR 55-73.5 years), p < 0.001) and longer length of stay in the ICU (median 15 days (IQR 5-25 days) vs. median 2 days (IQR 1-5 days), p < 0.001). PA was independently associated with organ failure (OR = 4.62, 95% CI 2.11-10.11, p < 0.001) and higher in-house mortality (OR = 3.37, 95% CI 1.23-9.28, p < 0.001). In median, PA occurred 66.5 h after surgery. In follow-up, 31% of all the patients with PA showed development of permanent arrhythmia. The incidence of PA after lower GI surgery is comparatively low. Its occurrence, however, seems to have severe implications since it is significantly associated with higher rates of organ failure and in-house mortality. Also, compared to the general population, the development of permanent arrhythmia is significantly higher in patients who developed new-onset PA.

The exploration and development of the dual-provenance lower assemblage of the Yanchang Formation in the Jiyuan area has progressed rapidly. At the intersection of this bidirectional provenance system, a complex and variable spatial combination of sand bodies formed, resulting in significant structural heterogeneity in the development and distribution of reservoirs. Based on previous studies, this paper combines core data and logging data with a large number of analytical tests and production performance data to carry out research on the Chang 82-Chang 9 reservoir group in the lower assemblage of the Yanchang Formation in the Shijiawan-Buziwan area. Based on the analysis of sedimentary conditions, the sand body development pattern at the intersection of the bidirectional sedimentary system in the study area was analysed by stepwise dissection of the sand body architecture. After the types and characteristics of the 4th- to 5th-level architectural elements were determined, the spatial distribution of the combinations of these elements was assessed and combined with logging discriminant analysis and geometric shape prediction methods to identify a 'prism' architectural distribution pattern. The architectural elements are connected with the distribution of diagenetic facies, the spatial distribution patterns of different types of diagenetic facies under the constraints of the architecture are summarized by region, and the locations of potential favourable reservoir development are discussed. The results show that the degree of superposition and combination of the eight skeletal architectural elements in the target layers gradually deteriorate from the bottom to the top. In addition, the development scale and degree of architectural elements in the braided river delta system in the west are better than those in the meandering river delta system in the east. In the different sedimentary areas, the spatial combination styles of the architectural elements are quite different, and the combination of these elements gradually changes from a combination of braided channels (FA1) and abandoned channels (FA2) to a combination of underwater distributary channels (FA4). Matching of the distribution of diagenetic facies with the distribution of architectural elements reveals that the diagenetic facies dominated by intergranular pores and dissolution pores (associated with good reservoir physical properties) are usually found at the bottom or in the lower to middle parts of the skeletal architectural elements.

Aging is an inevitable consequence of life, characterized by a progressive decline in tissue and organ function and an increased risk of death. There is growing evidence that aging is closely related to tumor development and immune regulation. However, in hepatocellular carcinoma, the relationship between cellular senescence and immune infiltration, energy metabolism, chemokines, and immunotherapeutic response is unclear and needs further study. We first analyzed 274 cellular senescence-associated genes by the NMF algorithm and identified two cellular senescence-associated clusters. Subsequently, we compared the differences between the two clusters, in terms of immune infiltration, energy metabolism, chemokines, and immunotherapeutic response to treatment. We further constructed risk models using cellular senescence-associated signature genes that could effectively identify the two subpopulations. Finally, we validated the validity and robustness of the risk model using an external dataset. We found significant differences in survival prognosis between two cellular senescence-associated clusters. In addition, we found significant differences in immune cell infiltration, expression of energy metabolism-related genes, expression of chemokine-related genes, expression of immune checkpoint-related genes, Tumor Immune Dysfunction and Exclusion between the two clusters. Also, a scoring system associated with cellular senescence was developed and validated as an independent prognostic indicator. It was validated as an independent prognostic factor and immunotherapeutic predictor for HCC. It was validated as an independent prognostic factor and immunotherapeutic predictor for HCC. The cellular senescence-related scoring system was validated as an independent prognostic factor and immunotherapy predictor for HCC, and patients with low CSS were characterized by prolonged survival time. Our study confirmed the relationship between cellular senescence and immune cell infiltration, energy metabolism, chemokines, expression of immune checkpoint-related genes, and response to immunotherapy. This enhances our understanding of cellular senescence and tumor immune microenvironment, energy metabolism, chemokines, and provides new insights to improve immunotherapy outcomes in HCC patients. The global incidence of diabetes and related complications is gradually increasing, with cardiovascular complications being the leading cause of death in the diabetic population. The purpose of this study was to examine left ventricular function in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and conduct a feasibility analysis using automated cardiac motion quantification (aCMQ) approach. A total of 150 T2D patients with a history of diabetes mellitus dating back more than 10 years were chosen, and we treated 87 patients with T2D that had been present for less than 15 years as group I, 63 patients with T2D that had been present for more than 15 years as group II, and 50 healthy volunteers as the control group. From the three groups, clinical information, conventional ultrasonography parameters, and mitral annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE) parameters were gathered. aCMQ technique was used to collect longitudinal strain and circumferential strain in the left ventricle. Tissue motion mitral annular displacement technique (TMAD) in aCMQ was used to collect parameters related to TMAD, and cardiac motion quantification (CMQ) was used to collect two-dimensional global longitudinal strain (2D-GLS) to compare the degree of difference between the aforementioned three groups. The differences between longitudinal strain groups in aCMQ were all statistically significant and gradually decreased with increasing disease duration. Most TMAD parameters were lower in groups I and II than in the control group, and TMAD parameters gradually decreased with increasing disease duration. The results of the LV global longitudinal strain and 2D-GLS using Bland-Altman analyses showed high agreement between and within groups, Pearson correlation analysis showed a significant positive correlation (r = 0.18, P < 0.05), and the AUC of ROC curves predicting the value of left ventricular function in patients with T2D was 0.723 and 0.628, respectively. With significant positive correlations between MAPSE, s', and the majority of the TAMD parameters (P < 0.05), TAMD, MAPSE, and s' demonstrated high inter- and intra-group agreement using Bland-Altman analyses, and the three had predictive value in assessing left ventricular function in T2D patients by ROC curve. Reduced longitudinal strain and reduced mitral annular displacement were seen in patients with different disease stages of T2D, so the application of aCMQ and TAMD was effective in detecting altered left ventricular function in patients with T2D. aCMQ had higher value in predicting left ventricular function in patients with T2D compared to CMQ for overall longitudinal strain, and the software performed the depiction automatically, reducing manual errors. MAPSE parameters and s ' can replace the TMAD technique for assessing mitral annular motion and was simpler to perform, saving operational time.

Based on engineering background that local heating of coal seam is uneven due to underground coal gasification, coal-bed gas exploitation via heat injection, spontaneous combustion of coal seam, etc., segmented heating coal sample was used to simulate coal seam under uneven heating condition, and experimental study on mechanical behaviors of coal sample after segmented heat treatment at high temperatures was conducted. Test results show that temperature at 100 °C ~ 400 °C did not reach ignition temperature of deep hard coal for the experiment and was not enough to change main ingredients of coal sample, which less affected compression strength, elastic modulus, acoustic emission behavior of coal sample. Although compaction stage-elastic stage-plastic stage-broken stage appeared in compression stress-strain curve of coal sample, height increase led to decrease of compression strength, elastic modulus of coal sample, cumulative amplitude and ringing count for acoustic emission in the form of power function. Meanwhile, it is found that final failure modes of coal sample after segmented heat were mainly shear failure and separation failure and friction mixed failure was secondary. In addition, influence of heating temperature at 100 °C ~ 400 °C on failure modes of coal sample was small. However, height increase in the heating section of coal sample made shear failure surface gradually move to the heating section and separation failure surface moved with the change of contact surface position between heating section and non-heating section. Furthermore, the integral failure degree of coal sample was more serious. Finally, based on variation behaviors of acoustic emission parameter for coal sample after segmented heating, inversion formula on acoustic emission parameter for strength of coal sample was discussed and verified via experimental result of coal sample with different segmented heat height after heating treatment at 200 °C.

The US Caribbean ocean circulation is governed by an influx of Atlantic water through the passages between Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Virgin Islands, and an interplay of the Caribbean Sea water with the local topography of the region. We present an analysis of the US Caribbean ocean flow simulated by the USCROMS; which is the ROMS AGRIF model configured for the US Caribbean regional ocean at a horizontal resolution of 2 km. Outputs from the USCROMS show a seasonal variability in the strength of submesoscale turbulence within a mixed layer whose depth varies from -70 to -20 m from winter to summer, and internal tides originating from the passages between the islands. Energy spectra of the simulated baroclinic velocity show diurnal and semi-diurnal maxima and several higher-order harmonic frequency maxima associated with non-linear internal waves forming over steep slopes with super-critical topography in the continental shelf. The strongest conversion rates of the depth-averaged barotropic to baroclinic tidal energy occur at localized regions in the continental shelf with super-critical topography. These regions also exhibit enhanced transport and dissipation of the depth-averaged barotropic and baroclinic tidal kinetic energy. The dissipation in these regions is nearly 3 orders of magnitude stronger than the open ocean dissipation. The energy transport terms show a seasonal pattern characterized by stronger variance during summer and reduced variance during the winter. At the benthic regions, the dissipation levels depend on the topographic depth and the tidal steepness parameter. If the benthic region lies within the upper-ocean mixed-layer, the benthic dissipation is enhanced by surface-forced processes like wind forcing, convective mixing, submesoscale turbulence and bottom friction. If the benthic region lies below the mixed-layer, the benthic dissipation is enhanced by the friction between the super-critical topographic slopes and the periodically oscillating baroclinic tidal currents. Due to bottom friction, the tidal oscillation in the lateral currents adjacent to the sloping topography generates cyclonic and anti-cyclonic vortices with O(1) Rossby number depending on the orientation of the flow. While the cyclonic vortices form positive potential vorticity (q) leading to barotropic shear instability, anti-cyclonic vortices form negative q which leads to periodically occurring inertial instability. The lateral and inertial instabilities caused by the baroclinic tidal oscillations act as routes to submesoscale turbulence at the benthic depths of -100 m to -400 m near the super-critical topography of the continental shelf, forming O(10 km) long streaks of turbulent water with dissipation levels that are 3 orders of magnitude stronger than the dissipation in the open ocean at the same depth. The magnitudes of the dissipation and q at the benthic regions over super-critical continental-shelf topography are also modulated by the spring-neap tidal signals.

In order to classify and analyze the parameters of upper body posture in clinical or physiotherapeutic settings, a baseline in the form of standard values with special regard to age, sex and BMI is required. Thus, subjectively healthy men and women aged 21-60 years were measured in this project. The postural parameters of 800 symptom-free male (n = 397) and female (n = 407) volunteers aged 21-60 years (Ø♀: 39.7 ± 11.6, Ø ♂: 40.7 ± 11.5 y) were studied. The mean height of the men was 1.8 ± 0.07 m, with a mean body weight of 84.8 ± 13.1 kg and an average BMI of 26.0 ± 3.534 kg/m2. In contrast, the mean height of the women was 1.67 ± 0.06 m, with a mean body weight of 66.5 ± 12.7 kg and an average BMI of 23.9 ± 4.6 kg/m2. By means of video rasterstereography, a 3-dimensional scan of the upper back surface was measured when in a habitual standing position. The means or medians, confidence intervals, tolerance ranges, the minimum, 2.5, 25, 50, 75, 97.5 percentiles and the maximum, plus the kurtosis and skewness of the distribution, were calculated for all parameters. Additionally, ANOVA and a factor analyses (sex, BMI, age) were conducted. In both sexes across all age groups, balanced, symmetrical upper body statics were evident. Most strikingly, the females showed greater thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis angles (kyphosis: Ø ♀ 56°, Ø♂ 51°; lordosis: Ø ♀ 49°, Ø♂ 32°) and lumbar bending angles (Ø ♀ 14°, Ø♂ 11°) than the males. The distance between the scapulae was more pronounced in men. These parameters also show an increase with age and BMI, respectively. Pelvic parameters were independent of age and sex. The upper body postures of women and men between the ages of 21 and 60 years were found to be almost symmetrical and axis-conforming with a positive correlation for BMI or age. Consequently, the present body posture parameters allow for comparisons with other studies, as well as for the evaluation of clinical (interim) diagnostics and applications.

To investigate the effect of heat loss reduction due to thermal insulator and thermal interface resistance due to multi-layer structure in order to improve the efficiency of a thermoelectric device, a thermoelectric concrete brick was fabricated using a unileg n-type CaMnO3 thermoelectric module inside. CaMnO3 thermoelectric materials were synthesized by starting materials CaCO3 and MnO2 to produce a unileg n-type CaMnO3 module. Thermoelectric concrete brick consisted of two types: I-layer brick (one layer of concrete thermal insulator) and III-layer brick (three layers of different concrete insulators). The occurring temperature difference, electric current and voltage on the CaMnO3 module and thermoelectric concrete brick were measured in closed and open circuits. The temperature difference, thermal distribution, and output voltage when applying constant temperatures of 100, 200 and 400 °C were measured. Computer simulations of the Finite Element Method (FEM) were performed to compare with the experimental results. The trends of the temperature difference and the output voltage from the experimental and computer simulations were in good agreement. The results of the temperature difference during the hotter side temperature of 200 °C exhibited the temperature difference along the vertical direction of the thermoelectric concrete bricks for both types of the III-layer brick of 172 °C and the I-layer brick of 132 °C are larger than that of the CaMnO3 TEG module without using a thermal concrete insulator of 108 °C. The thermoelectric concrete bricks of the III-layer brick type of 27.70 mV displayed output voltage results being higher than those of the I-layer brick of 26.57 mV and the CaMnO3 TEG module without using a thermal concrete insulator of 24.35 mV. Thermoelectric concrete brick of the III-layer brick type displayed higher electric generation power than the I-layer brick and the CaMnO3 TEG module. Additionally, the results exhibited the capability of thermoelectric concrete brick in the III-layer brick model for electric generation power based on the temperature difference. The TEG concrete brick of I-layer concrete covering the series-parallel combination circuit of 120 modules of the unileg n-type CaMnO3 was constructed and then embedded on the outer surface of the furnace. During the maximum hotter side temperature of 580 °C of the concrete brick, the temperature difference between the hotter side and the cooler side of the brick occurred at 365 °C and the maximum output voltage was obtained at 581.7 mV.

The European Quality of Government Index (EQI) measures the perceived level of government quality by European Union citizens, combining surveys on corruption, impartiality and quality of provided services. It is, thus, an index based on individual subjective evaluations. Understanding the most relevant objective factors affecting the EQI outcomes is important for both evaluators and policy makers, especially in view of the fact that perception of government integrity contributes to determine the level of civic engagement. In our research, we employ methods of Artificial Intelligence and complex systems physics to measure the impact on the perceived government quality of multifaceted variables, describing territorial development and citizen well-being, from an economic, social and environmental viewpoint. Our study, focused on a set of regions in European Union at a subnational scale, leads to identifying the territorial and demographic drivers of citizens' confidence in government institutions. In particular, we find that the 2021 EQI values are significantly related to two indicators: the first one is the difference between female and male labour participation rates, and the second one is a proxy of wealth and welfare such as the average number of rooms per inhabitant. This result corroborates the idea of a central role played by labour gender equity and housing policies in government confidence building. In particular, the relevance of the former indicator in EQI prediction results from a combination of positive conditions such as equal job opportunities, vital labour market, welfare and availability of income sources, while the role of the latter is possibly amplified by the lockdown policies related to the COVID-19 pandemics. The analysis is based on combining regression, to predict EQI from a set of publicly available indicators, with the eXplainable Artificial Intelligence approach, that quantifies the impact of each indicator on the prediction. Such a procedure does not require any ad-hoc hypotheses on the functional dependence of EQI on the indicators used to predict it. Finally, using network science methods concerning community detection, we investigate how the impact of relevant indicators on EQI prediction changes throughout European regions. Thus, the proposed approach enables to identify the objective factors at the basis of government quality perception by citizens in different territorial contexts, providing the methodological basis for the development of a quantitative tool for policy design.

This research aimed to examine the antioxidant polysaccharide activity (PsPc-3) derived from Pleurotus columbinus (P. columbinus) on oxidative renal injury (ORI) induced by cisplatin (CP). The principal components of crude polysaccharide were assessed. We studied the preventive impact of polysaccharide on cisplatin-induced renal damage in this study. For 21 days, we employed the CP-induced ORI rat model and divided the rats into four groups: control, CP alone, polysaccharide post CP (100 mg/kg) orally, and CP + polysaccharide (pre and post). The chemical characterization of the polysaccharide fraction PsPc-3 stated that protein was not present. PsPc-3 contained 7.2% uronic acid as assessed as 0% sulfate. PsPc-3 hydrolysate structured of Galacturonic:Glucose:Xylose and their molar proportions were 1:4:5, respectively. The average molecular weight (Mw) and molecular mass (Mn) per molecule of PsPc-3 were 5.49 × 104 g/mol and Mn of 4.95 × 104 g/mol respectively. DPPH radical scavenging activity was demonstrated by the polysaccharide of 65.21-95.51% at 10 mg/ml with IC50 less than 10 mg/ml. CP increased serum urea to 92.0 mg/dl and creatinine up to 1.0 mg/dl, with a concurrent decrease in the levels of total protein to 4.0 mg/dl. Besides, Also, CP-induced ORI raised levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and renal hormones (renin and aldosterone), with a decline in antioxidants compared to control rats. In addition, in the presence of CP, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) levels increased. PsPc-3 decreased these changes dramatically. PsPc-3 improves pathological renal damage caused by CP and decreases tubular apoptosis measured by DNA ladder formation and cleaved caspase- 3. These findings showed that PsPc-3 isolated from P. columbinus protects and inhibits tubular apoptosis in cisplatin-induced ORI. Furthermore, PsPc-3 has no influence on the anticancer efficacy of CP in rats. Thus, PsPc-3 derived from P. columbinus might provide a novel therapy method for cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity.

Increasing the use of cover crops (CCs) is a necessity in sustainable viticulture, although it might clash with possible excessive competition towards vines. Especially in a climate-change scenario, the latter feature should be minimized while maintaining ecosystem services. Aimed at identifying CCs for vineyard floor management, the trial characterized several species according to their evapotranspiration (ET) rates, root growth patterns, and soil aggregate stability potential. The study was performed in 2020 in Piacenza (Northern Italy) on 15 CC species grown in pots kept outdoor and classified as grasses (GR), legumes (LE) and creeping (CR). Together with bare soil (control), they were arranged in a complete randomized block design. CCs ET was assessed through a gravimetric method, starting before mowing and then repeated 2, 8, 17 and 25 days thereafter. Above-ground dry biomass (ADW), root length density (RLD), root dry weight (RDW) and root diameter class length (DCL) were measured, and mean weight diameter (MWD) was calculated within 0-20 cm depth. Before mowing, ET was the highest in LE (18.6 mm day-1) and the lowest in CR (8.1 mm day-1) the latter being even lower than the control (8.5 mm day-1). The high ET rates shown by LE were mainly related to very fast development after sowing, rather than to a higher transpiration per unit of leaf area. After mowing, the 15 species' ET reduction (%) plotted vs leaf area index (LAI, m2 m-2) yielded a very close fit (R2 = 0.94), suggesting that (i) a linear decrease in water use is expected anytime starting with an initial LAI of 5-6, (ii) a saturation effect seems to be reached beyond this limit. Selection of cover crop species to be used in the vineyard was mainly based on diurnal and seasonal water use rates as well as dynamic and extent of root growth patterns. Among GR, Festuca ovina stood out as the one with the lowest ET due to its "dwarfing" characteristics, making it suitable for a permanent inter-row covering. CR species confirmed their potential for under-vine grassing, assuring rapid soil coverage, lowest ET rates, and shallow root colonization.

Manual visual review, annotation and categorization of electroencephalography (EEG) is a time-consuming task that is often associated with human bias and requires trained electrophysiology experts with specific domain knowledge. This challenge is now compounded by development of measurement technologies and devices allowing large-scale heterogeneous, multi-channel recordings spanning multiple brain regions over days, weeks. Currently, supervised deep-learning techniques were shown to be an effective tool for analyzing big data sets, including EEG. However, the most significant caveat in training the supervised deep-learning models in a clinical research setting is the lack of adequate gold-standard annotations created by electrophysiology experts. Here, we propose a semi-supervised machine learning technique that utilizes deep-learning methods with a minimal amount of gold-standard labels. The method utilizes a temporal autoencoder for dimensionality reduction and a small number of the expert-provided gold-standard labels used for kernel density estimating (KDE) maps. We used data from electrophysiological intracranial EEG (iEEG) recordings acquired in two hospitals with different recording systems across 39 patients to validate the method. The method achieved iEEG classification (Pathologic vs. Normal vs. Artifacts) results with an area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) scores of 0.862 ± 0.037, 0.879 ± 0.042, and area under the precision-recall curve (AUPRC) scores of 0.740 ± 0.740, 0.714 ± 0.042. This demonstrates that semi-supervised methods can provide acceptable results while requiring only 100 gold-standard data samples in each classification category. Subsequently, we deployed the technique to 12 novel patients in a pseudo-prospective framework for detecting Interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). We show that the proposed temporal autoencoder was able to generalize to novel patients while achieving AUROC of 0.877 ± 0.067 and AUPRC of 0.705 ± 0.154.

There is a pressing need for global health preventions to curb the escalating burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Utilising multi-country study designs can improve our understanding of how socio-economic context shapes the aetiology of NCDs, and this has great potential to advance global health interventions. We examined the association between socio-economic status (SES) and NCD risk, and the potential confounding effects of smoking and alcohol intake in young adults (18-35-year-olds) from Kenya, South Africa (SA), and the United Kingdom (UK). Our study was a cross-sectional online survey that included 3000 respondents (n = 1000 per country, 50% women) conducted in April 2022. We utilised information on twelve NCDs to classify respondents as having "no condition", "one condition", and "multimorbidity" (having two or more conditions). A total household asset score was calculated and used as a proxy of SES, and subsequently categorised into quintiles (Q1-Q5; lowest-highest). Ordered logistic regression was used to test the associations between NCD risk and exposure variables. In the UK sample, we found that those in the second lowest SES quintile (Q2) had lower odds of developing NCDs than their lowest SES counterparts (Q1). In contrast, South African and Kenyan youth with a SES score between middle and highest quintiles (Q3-Q5) were more likely to develop NCDs than the lowest SES quintile group. In all countries, smoking and/or alcohol intake were associated with higher odds of developing NCDs, and showed some confounding effects on the SES-NCD relationships. Specifically, in Kenya, the risk of developing NCD was more than two times higher in those in the middle (Q3) SES group (OR 2.493; 95% CI 1.519-4.091; p < 0.001) compared to their lowest (Q1) SES counterparts. After adjusting for smoking and alcohol, the ORs of middle (Q3) SES group changed from 2.493 to 2.241 (1.360-3.721; p = 0.002). Overall, we found that the strength and direction of SES-NCD associations differed within and between countries. This study highlights how different SES contexts shape the risk of NCDs among young adults residing in countries at different levels of economic development.

Extracting meaning from a dynamic and variable flow of incoming information is a major goal of both natural and artificial intelligence. Computer vision (CV) guided by deep learning (DL) has made significant strides in recognizing a specific identity despite highly variable attributes. This is the same challenge faced by the nervous system and partially addressed by the concept cells-neurons exhibiting selective firing in response to specific persons/places, described in the human medial temporal lobe (MTL) ⁠. Yet, access to neurons representing a particular concept is limited due to these neurons' sparse coding. It is conceivable, however, that the information required for such decoding is present in relatively small neuronal populations. To evaluate how well neuronal populations encode identity information in natural settings, we recorded neuronal activity from multiple brain regions of nine neurosurgical epilepsy patients implanted with depth electrodes, while the subjects watched an episode of the TV series "24". First, we devised a minimally supervised CV algorithm (with comparable performance against manually-labeled data) to detect the most prevalent characters (above 1% overall appearance) in each frame. Next, we implemented DL models that used the time-varying population neural data as inputs and decoded the visual presence of the four main characters throughout the episode. This methodology allowed us to compare "computer vision" with "neuronal vision"-footprints associated with each character present in the activity of a subset of neurons-and identify the brain regions that contributed to this decoding process. We then tested the DL models during a recognition memory task following movie viewing where subjects were asked to recognize clip segments from the presented episode. DL model activations were not only modulated by the presence of the corresponding characters but also by participants' subjective memory of whether they had seen the clip segment, and by the associative strengths of the characters in the narrative plot. The described approach can offer novel ways to probe the representation of concepts in time-evolving dynamic behavioral tasks. Further, the results suggest that the information required to robustly decode concepts is present in the population activity of only tens of neurons even in brain regions beyond MTL.

In this study, for the first time, the comparison of commercially available chemical ZnO NCs and bio-ZnO NCs produced extracellularly by two different probiotic isolates (Latilactobacillus curvatus MEVP1 [OM736187] and Limosilactobacillus fermentum MEVP2 [OM736188]) were performed. All types of ZnO formulations were characterized by comprehensive interdisciplinary approach including various instrumental techniques in order to obtain nanocomposites with suitable properties for further applications, i.e. biomedical. Based on the X- ray diffraction analysis results, all tested nanoparticles exhibited the wurtzite structure with an average crystalline size distribution of 21.1 nm (CHEM_ZnO NCs), 13.2 nm (1C_ZnO NCs) and 12.9 nm (4a_ZnO NCs). The microscopy approach with use of broad range of detectors (SE, BF, HAADF) revealed the core-shell structure of bio-ZnO NCs, compared to the chemical one. The nanoparticles core of 1C and 4a_ZnO NCs are coated by the specific organic deposit coming from the metabolites produced by two probiotic strains, L. fermentum and L. curvatus. Vibrational infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) and mass spectrometry (LDI-TOF-MS) have been used to monitor the ZnO NCs surface chemistry and allowed for better description of bio-NCs organic coating composition (amino acids residues). The characterized ZnO formulations were then assessed for their photocatalytic properties against methylene blue (MB). Both types of bio-ZnO NCs exhibited good photocatalytic activity, however, the effect of CHEM_ZnO NCs was more potent than bio-ZnO NCs. Finally, the colloidal stability of the tested nanoparticles were investigated based on the zeta potential (ZP) and hydrodynamic diameter measurements in dependence of the nanocomposites concentration and investigation time. During the biosynthesis of nano-ZnO, the increment of pH from 5.7 to around 8 were observed which suggested possible contribution of zinc aquacomplexes and carboxyl-rich compounds resulted in conversion of zinc tetrahydroxy ion complex to ZnO NCs. Overall results in present study suggest that used accessible source such us probiotic strains, L. fermentum and L. curvatus, for extracellular bio-ZnO NCs synthesis are of high interest. What is important, no significant differences between organic deposit (e.g. metabolites) produced by tested strains were noticed-both of them allowed to form the nanoparticles with natural origin coating. In comparison to chemical ZnO NCs, those synthetized via microbiological route are promising material with further biological potential once have shown high stability during 7 days.

Malnutrition and morbidity are substantial problems in Ethiopia and are still pervasive and persistent. Despite this, there has been scant research on the coexistence of malnutrition and morbidity indicators. Moreover, previous studies were based on all data records of measurements from manifest data. Thus, this study aims to identify the correlates and coexistence of child malnutrition and morbidity within this country. Cross-sectional data which is collected by Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey were used. The generalized structural equation models were used to examine the association between child malnutrition, morbidity, and potential risk factors. The generalized structural equation models help to provide latent effects of child malnutrition and morbidity within a combined modeling framework. In addition, the generalized structural equation models make it possible to analyze malnutrition as a mediator of the association between selected risk factors and latent variable morbidity. The data analysis was done using SPSS AMOS and R software. The analysis indicated that children born to nourished mothers (AOR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.68-0.75), born to enough birth space between 24 and 47 months and (AOR = 0.93, 95% CI 0.88-0.99), 48 months and above (AOR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.65-0.76), being from middle-income households (AOR = 0.85, 95% CI 0.78-0.91), high-income households (AOR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.61-0.72), from mother with primary or secondary (AOR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.75-0.85) and higher education level (AOR = 0.57, 95% CI 0.41-0.78) were less affected by malnutrition. It also revealed that a child born second to third (AOR = 0.87, 95% CI 0.77-0.99), fourth and higher (AOR = 0.88, 95% CI 0.79-0.99) and children from a husband-educated higher level (AOR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.64-0.89) were less likely to be ill. Children who breastfeed (AOR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.80-0.99), from nourished mothers (AOR = 0.96, 95% CI 0.94-0.097), from middle income (AOR = 0.97, 95% CI 0.96-0.99), high-income households (AOR = 0.94, 95% CI 0.93-0.96), birth spacing 24-47 months (AOR = 0.99, 95% CI 0.98-1.00) and 48 months and above (AOR = 0.96, 95% CI 0.94-0.97) were indirectly affected by morbidity via malnutrition. This investigation has revealed that childhood malnutrition and morbidity remain major child health challenges in Ethiopia with demographic, socioeconomic, maternal, child, and geographic variables playing significant roles. Efforts to resolve these issues need to take these factors into account. Therefore, malnutrition and morbidity prevention should include encouraging birth spacing, mother education programs, and breastfeeding practices.
